Wahkon: A century of growing in faith

Sacred Heart parishioners in Wahkon, Minn., will mark their church centennial Sept. 11 with Mass celebrated by Bishop John Kinney, special prayers for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, dinner and a display of historic items. Crosier Father Jerry Schik is pastor of the parish.

A core committee collected 325 favorite recipes from 84 parish members and others who attend services during the summer months when living in their lake homes and published “Sacred Heart Church Centennial Cookbook: Celebrating 100 Years of Growing in Faith.”

Gracing the cover of their cookbook is a photograph of a stained glass window installed in 2004. In the window, Jesus is surrounded by elements representing Wakhon’s Native American neighbors, the Crosier Community in nearby Onamia, Minn., Mille Lacs Lake, Spirit Island and the Virgin Mary.

Incidentally, the name Wakhon comes from a Dakota word for spirit. “Mde Wahkon” meaning “Spirit Lake,” was the Dakota name for the lake that French fur traders later called Mille Lacs. The Dakota consider the lake sacred because they believed their people were created from its waters.

The committee who prepared this commemorative cookbook includes chairperson Mary Bannick, Delores Beert, Kathy Chlebecek, Phyllis Ketchmark, Kathy Martinson and Sue Moss. Upcoming recipes from the cookbook include Mediterranean Watermelon Salad with Vinaigrette, Spinach Balls, Blueberry French Toast and Chicken Crepes.

To order the Sacred Heart cookbook, contact the parish office through their website at shwahkon.stclouddiocese.net or by phoning the office at 320-495-3324. The books are $10 plus $4.95 for shipping. CJK
